The Maharashtra School Education Department has announced special sessions on positive discipline for teachers in all districts, talukas, and central education councils across the state. This move comes in response to increasing reports of corporal punishment in schools and growing concerns over its impact on students.

The sessions, lasting at least 45 minutes, will be begin in the first week of December. They aim to strengthen the mental health of students, create a safe learning environment, and improve teacher-student relationships.

During the sessions, teachers will learn about the Right to Education Act provisions related to corporal punishment and their responsibilities. Topics will include types and effects of punishment, its impact on student morale and mental well-being, and the ideas of prominent educational thinkers on positive discipline.

The training will also cover positive discipline principles, classroom management techniques based on communication, cooperation, and counselling, and effective methods to discipline students without resorting to punishment. Teachers will be introduced to practical positive discipline techniques and activities for everyday classroom use.

Officials said the initiative is part of a broader effort to promote a safe and supportive school environment while encouraging teachers to adopt more constructive and nurturing approaches to student guidance.
