In its drive to digitise teacher records, the Maharashtra education department has once again extended the deadline for uploading crucial teacher appointment documents to the Shalarth system from September 15 to 20. Over the past few weeks, several schools across Mumbai have been extensively compiling and providing all the teacher appointment documents to the Shalarth Pay System 2.0.

This comes months after the Shalarth ID scandal was first uncovered in Nagpur, where authorities found forged appointment approvals, fake Shalarth identification documents, and bogus certificates, culminating in the arrest of education department officials.

In Mumbai’s south zone, as many as 83 per cent of schools have already finished the process, while many others are held up due to minor technical glitches, according to the education inspector. In the next two days, the count of verified schools is likely to go up to 90 per cent.

In the west zone, 6137 of 6289 schools have been verified, according to Sanjay Javir, inspector, west zone. “Nearly 97 per cent of schools from the zone have been covered and the digitised documents will be verified at three levels, where the principal, department officials, and the inspectors themselves will authenticate the documents,” he added.

The digitising, however, has been tough on schools. With a limited number of clerks looking for dated administrative documents, the schools have their hands full and are now awaiting a green signal from education inspectors, confirming all their documents are valid.

“I had nearly 39 teacher records to upload with only two clerical staff members. The past week called for late evenings at schools, but we made do. Since the move has been made in the spirit of transparency and reducing corruption, my school is happy to cooperate,” said a Dadar school principal. After the digitising, principals are looking at offline verifications, too.
