Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar on Tuesday announced that he will make concerted efforts to name the Vile Parle Metro Station after former Mumbai Mayor and MLA Dr Ramesh Prabhoo. The announcement was made during the launch of the book “Prabhoo Mahima”, which chronicles the life, contributions, and political journey of Dr Prabhoo.
Dr Prabhoo, who devoted his life to the Shiv Sena and the development of Vile Parle, played a prominent role in educational, sports, health, and political spheres. He gained national attention during the 1987 Vile Parle by-election, where his campaign became associated with Hindutva, leading to a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 1995. Despite his contributions, Dr Prabhoo was reportedly overlooked by the party in later years.
The book launch, held at Dinanath Mangeshkar Auditorium in Vile Parle, featured a theatrical presentation conceptualised by his daughter Leena, highlighting the inspiring lives of Dr Ramesh Prabhoo and his wife, the late Dr Pushpa. Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar was the chief guest at the event.
Several dignitaries were in attendance for the event, including Vile Parle MLA Parag Alavani, former MP and minister Gajanan Kirtikar, former Mayor Nirmala Samant-Prabhawalkar, and other community leaders. Speakers praised Dr Prabhoo’s contributions to politics, social work, and the Shiv Sena, emphasising his dedication to unity and service.
Leena urged that public institutions, including the Vile Parle Metro Station, hospitals, schools, and colleges, be named after Dr Prabhoo. She also requested that copies of “Prabhoo Mahima” be placed in every library in the state to educate future generations about his life and sacrifices.
Shelar expressed support for the proposal, stating, “I will make concerted efforts to ensure Dr Prabhoo’s legacy is honoured and remembered by all.”
The event, organised by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Smarak Samitee, Juhu, Mumbai, underscored the political and social impact of Dr Prabhoo’s life, presenting him as a figure of dedication, leadership, and public service.
