Mumbai: Mazgaon court to be razed after May 10

The state government yesterday told the Bombay High Court that it will be demolishing Mazgaon court building after May 10. On this, the court directed the state to start constructing a new building soon after monsoon.

An HC bench of Justice S C Dharmadhikari and Justice Shalini Phansalkar Joshi has been monitoring the proceedings before the demolition of the five-storey Mazgaon court, which has been declared dangerous for occupation just 15 years after construction.

Around Rs 387 crore will be required to construct the new building of 17 floors that will have 48 courtrooms.

To get funds released for the purpose, the high court has, in the last few hearings, threatened the government to stay the construction of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue and also slammed government for making money available for ministers’ bungalows but not for courts. This made the state release Rs 29 crore for the demolition and initial stages of construction.

The state has received bids and will open the tender to select a company for demolition on May 10. The work order will be issue in the next seven days. “We want you to demolish the old court building before pre-monsoon and start new construction post-monsoon,” said Justice madhikari.

The documents kept at the current building will be shifted to a temporary location till then.
