A group of nine roller skating coaches gathered on the eve of Republic Day to undertake a feat that requires precision, patience and endurance. They skated non-stop for 12 hours, with tricolour in their hands as a "salute to the nation" on Republic Day.

The skaters from Goregaon, Malad, Andheri, Thane and other areas, did several rounds between Madh Island and Marve Road—which is roughly 9 km one way. They covered nearly 105 km with six laps from 8 pm on January 25 to 8 am on January 26.

Zahid Husein Sheikh, Anurag Pralhad Bavkar, Amit Ramnarayan Mishra, Deepak Dashrath Avhad, Sachin Rajendra Jadhav, Nikhil Jagannath Bavkar and Neelptpal Niranjan Roy were led by team leaders Jay Surendra Singh and Akshay Pandurang Kamble, all aged between 25 and 35.

Kamble, 29, a resident of Marve village, said, “During the lockdown, we planned a group activity and decided to go ahead with the route on Republic Day. We practised rigorously for three months. The tricky part of skating at night is there is a 2-km rocky stretch. I even fell down there and hurt my leg. Another member had a severe shoe bite.” "There are no skating records on open roads - they are all made on skating rinks. That is how ours was different,” he added.
