With the civic elections round the corner, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a bonus to its employees and those of the BEST Undertaking on Friday.
The Rs 20,000 bonus is double than that of last year for BEST employees and a 25 per cent rise for BMC employees. Every year, unions fight with the administration over bonus, but this time it has come without any issues. The bonanza is for over 1.30 lakh employees of the BMC and BEST. Last year, BMC employees received Rs 15,500 which was Rs 500 more than the previous year. BEST employees received just Rs 10,100 last year.

A bonus of Rs 10,000 was also announced for teachers and teaching staff of aided private schools, Rs 5,600 for primary education volunteers, Rs 5,300 for health workers and Rs 2,800 for education volunteers. The bonus will place a burden of Rs 250 crore on the municipal coffers. Every year, meetings for the bonus take place at the Mayor's bungalow, but this year they were held at Varsha, official residence of the chief minister.
