Ahead of the BMC budget, its standing committee members on Wednesday accused the civic administration of not sharing details about its revenue and expenses with them, particularly about COVID management.
The BMC plans to present its budget next week amid a steep decline in its revenue. The civic body managed to achieve 40 per cent of its target till December.
Rais Shaikh of Samajwadi Party said the commissioner has stopped informal meetings with group leaders since the pandemic broke out. “There are several issues unattended like the financial condition of the corporation and steps to improve it,” said Shaikh. Shiv Sena member Vishwanath Mahadeshwar demanded resumption of the meetings.
Ravi Raja, leader of the opposition, said BMC is not ready to clear doubts about sources of income and expenses. "There is a process to issue bonds [infra]. Whether the administration followed it is best known to them," he said. Vishakha Raut, leader of the House, and BJP's Prabhakar Shinde too sought more clarity.
How much for COVID?
The committee received proposals worth Rs 1,665 crore to fight COVID, while the administration took permission for an additional R4,000 crore till March. Shinde sought to punch holes in the revenue expenses of Rs 3,280 crore shown under Operation and Maintenance cost.
