Art Mumbai returns to the city for its third edition this month from November 13 to 16. This year, the festival will feature a curated Sculpture Park that will highlight pioneering and emerging female sculptors from South Asia, transforming the open space of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse into an immersive journey.

Featuring works by Adeela Suleiman, Meera Mukherjee, Shambhavi Singh, Tarini Sethi, and several others, the installations explore themes like identity, labour, and reclamation through diverse material, and invite visitors to interact with the art for a sensory, participatory experience. Minal Vazirani (below), co-founder, ART MUMBAI, said, “The growing participation of international galleries and strong attendance at the fair reflect how South Asia’s artists are shaping global conversations. The Sculpture Park embodies [the celebration] of the power and perspective of women artists.”

Happy showers at the Zoo

While Mumbaikars might grumble about the extended rainy spell in the city, the residents of the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo in Byculla have been enjoying it. A visitor revealed to this diarist that even the most reticent members were basking in the cool rain during a visit earlier this week. “The animals actually enjoy the rain because they love it. They are used to experiencing these seasons in the wild, and we have a lot of shaded areas for them to relax in. Moreover, they are provided with health boosters every monsoon. So, they make the most of it,” shared Zoo biologist, Dr Abhishek Satam.

Would you say yes to plastic?

Single-use plastic is a blessing for mankind; but we don’t know how to dispose of it,” contends Subhajit Mukherjee, founder, Mission Green Mumbai. Adapting a very different approach to recycling plastic, Mukherjee has repurposed it into ready-to-use furniture. “I’ve collected Multi-Layered Plastic (MLP) waste from local drives to make benches. Many have been placed in areas such as Singapore International School, and a Malad hospital,” he shared. For more information, log on to @mission_green_mumbai.

Bandra steps up for the food fiesta

Lovers of Mexican cuisine in Bandra will be pleased to know that Pali Hill Road is getting its very own spot for a tuck-in of colourful flavours. The much-loved Mexican haunt in Churchgate, Mezcalita, is set to open its doors in Bandra West on November 6. This diarist reached out to the team to know more about this new outlet, and what it offers to eager diners.

Rizwan Amlani (below), Brand Head, said, “[Opening the outlet in Bandra] feels like the natural next chapter after Churchgate. This new space is split across two levels, each with its own energy, from the buzzing bar downstairs to the warmer, more intimate setting above,” said. While the restaurant provides a variety of authentic, regional Mexican dishes and beverages, this diarist was told that the Pali Hill Road outlet will also feature some new fare on the menu.

“We’ve added 15 new dishes, authentic flavours of Mexico, a tequila forward bar for Mumbai,” Amlani confirmed. A few of these items include Chip & Dip Méxicana, Barbacoa Jackfruit, Chicken Tinga, and Chicken Tostada Salpicón. For those intrigued by bigger plates, there’s Méxican Angel Hair Pasta, and for dessert, Sweet Corn Pancakes are the latest delights at the counter.

“Bandra has always had its own charm, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone in to eat, drink, and fiesta the Mezcalita way,” Amlani added. If you’re a fan of tacos, nachos, and burritos, you might want to check this out.

Green scene amidst traffic

The divider near Century Bazaar, Worli has just sprouted green. These pots are perched on the divider of the traffic-dense road. The huge pots make a pleasant distraction from the grey all around (our current overcast grey sky too) and are a welcome green break in the scenery. More power to these aesthetic touches that transform our landscape in little, but significant ways. May we see all Mumbai dividers uplifted in different ways. Truly here: It is divide and let green rule.
