Considering how badly the first wave of the pandemic affected the city’s frontline workers, the Mumbai Police have set up five COVID helpdesks at the regional level for the force and their families so that they get proper healthcare at the right time. Assistant police inspector-rank officers are monitoring the desks.
Speaking to mid-day, Vishwas Nangre Patil, joint commissioner of police (law and order), said, “Earlier, we had only one desk at the CP’s office but considering the current situation, five more helpdesks have been set up at the regional level to collect details of positive cases in the force and supply the required medicines, help them get beds in hospitals and oxygen supply as well. The desks will also coordinate with their family members.”
Across India, the highest number of positive COVID cases was reported in the Mumbai police force during the first wave of the pandemic. As 75 per cent of the force has been vaccinated, the number of cases now is less compared to last year. But what still remains a matter of concern is that over the past eight days, 36 positive cases have been reported daily in the force. Eighteen cops have tested positive even after getting vaccinated.
“So far, 2,921 officers and 28,951 constables have received their first dose and 1,532 officers and 17,967 constables have got their second dose,” said DCP S Chaitanya, spokesperson, Mumbai Police.
The city police have also reopened the 250-bed COVID care centre at Kolekalyan in Santacruz East, which was shut last year after the number of cases dropped. The centre also has a control room for admissions. So far, the city police force has lost 103 cops to COVID-19. A total of 8,372 cases have been reported in the force, out of which 7,589 have recovered. Currently, there are 671 active cases. On Wednesday, Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale released R2 crore from the police welfare fund, so that R2 lakh could be given to each police station to buy masks and hand sanitisers.
