Schools across Dadar, Mahim, and Sion began sending students home early due to heavy rainfall this morning and the risk of waterlogging around school premises.

The Dr. Antonio da Silva High School near Kabutarkhana in Dadar West cancelled its primary section, which runs in the second half of the day. Secondary school students already present are being released once parents arrive to collect them. Officially, classes were scheduled until 12:50.

In Mahim, KJ Khilnani School released secondary students by 10:30 am, anticipating flooding. The decision was taken as many students come from Dharavi, Sion, and other flood-prone areas. The primary section, held in the afternoon, was given the day off.

In Mazgaon, Diamond Jubilee School did not declare a holiday as no directives came from authorities. However, parents of primary and pre-primary students are allowed to pick up their wards early, as nearby Byculla and Chinchpokli face flooding. Teachers commuting by train have also been permitted to leave an hour earlier.

Several South Mumbai schools, including Aditya Birla Integrated School in Fort, followed suit, closing classes earlier than usual.

Some school buses in Sion and Matunga suspended service, asking parents to collect children directly.

Meanwhile, schools in Mira Bhayandar continue to function as usual.

Mumbai colleges continue regular operations. At Mumbai University, students are scheduled to appear for their Master’s examinations at the CDOE (Centre for Distance and Online Education) as planned.

The IMD issued a 'red alert', forecasting extremely heavy rains at isolated places in Mumbai and neighbouring areas on Monday, prompting the city civic body to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges, officials said.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also appealed to residents to step out only if necessary.

Roads in several areas got inundated after the heavy downpour for the third consecutive day on Monday.

Some low-lying areas like the Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex witnessed water accumulation at a few locations, affecting traffic movement.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, and neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy showers at isolated locations on Monday and Tuesday.

It also issued a red alert for Ratnagiri district on Monday, and an orange alert for Sindhudurg on Monday and Tuesday.

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani announced that all educational institutions would remain shut for the afternoon session, citing the safety of students amid continuous downpour since morning.

The civic body, in a statement, appealed to the people to step out only if necessary.

It also appealed to residents to contact its disaster control helpline 1916 in case of emergencies or for official updates.

Heavy rains have been lashing Mumbai since Saturday.
