Global electric vehicle giant Tesla on Monday launched India's first charging station in Mumbai, weeks after entering the country's automobile market.
The charging station, located at One BKC in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, includes four V4 supercharging (DC) stalls and four destination charging (AC) stalls, the company said, according to the news agency PTI.
Tesla also announced plans to open three more charging stations by the end of the September quarter, at Lower Parel, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.
The company made its long-anticipated debut in India on July 15, launching the Model Y at a starting price of Rs 59.89 lakh and opening its first Experience Centre.
Tesla, led by American tech billionaire Elon Musk, who had in the past cited India's high import tariffs for the company not entering the country earlier, will be importing the Model Y as a completely built unit (CBU) from its Shanghai manufacturing facility in China.
The mid-sized electric SUV Model Y, which was once the world's best-selling car, will be offered in India in two variants: rear-wheel drive with a base price of Rs 59.89 lakh and long-range rear wheel drive at a base price of Rs 67.89 lakh, as per the news agency PTI.
The deliveries are slated to start in the third and fourth quarters of 2025, respectively, for the two variants.
The Tesla Supercharging Stalls offer a peak charging speed of 250 kW starting at Rs 24/kW and destination chargers providing 11kW at Rs 14/kW, the company said.
The charging station will offer four V4 Supercharging Stalls (DC) and four Destination Charging Stalls (AC), giving Tesla owners flexible charging options.
"Tesla Superchargers provide a fast and convenient way to charge a Tesla on the road, with an uptime of 99.95 per cent, meaning you never need to worry about whether you can charge your Tesla. The charging speed varies depending on several factors, including the battery's current state of charge and its temperature. The vehicle can route you to the charger of your choice and automatically precondition the battery before arriving at the station to ensure a faster charging experience," an official statement said.
