Modi on Friday inaugurated new lines between Thane and Diva, says more plans for city

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday dedicated to the nation, one of the city’s most delayed rail projects, the 5th and 6th lines between Thane and Diva, that took 14 years to complete. He said efforts were on to add an additional 400 km fresh railway network in the Mumbai suburban system, including in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to boost the capacity.
He flagged off new AC train services and said with the new corridor about 1 lakh more passengers’ had been added to the existing network capacity.

Modi said there were plans to modernise 19 stations in Mumbai with facilities and an advanced signalling system like Communications based Train Control (CBTC).
Recalling the contribution of Mumbai in the progress of independent India, the Prime Minister said that now the effort is to increase the city’s capability manifold, with regard to its contribution for Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
“That is why our special focus is on creating 21st century infrastructure for Mumbai”, the Prime Minister said. Thousands of crores of rupees are already being invested in rail connectivity in Mumbai as the Mumbai Suburban Rail system is being equipped with the latest technology.
The PM said, “The Ahmedabad-Mumbai High Speed Rail is the country’s need and will strengthen Mumbai’s identity as a city of dreams. Completing this project rapidly is our priority.”
The lines between Thane-Diva
The additional railway lines connecting Thane and Diva have been built at an approximate cost of Rs 620 crore and feature a 1.4 km long rail flyover, 3 major bridges and 21 minor bridges.
The project, which was sanctioned in 2008, is part of Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP 2B) and is crucial for the Central Railway (CR), as it will be a key factor in segregating the outstation and local train rail corridor and thus improve the speed/frequency of trains. With this, the main line of Mumbai suburban railway has got 35-km dedicated slow and fast corridors for suburban trains.
