Thane: 1 dead, another injured as speeding car rams into tree

The FIR has been filed in Chitalsar police station

One person died and another was injured after a speeding car rammed into a tree in Thane in the wee hours of Wednesday. The incident took place at 5:20 am near Raunak Park in Upvan.

The passengers in the car – Shivani Bhanushali (25) and Sumit Dhakankar (33) – were returning from Yeoor. Shivani, who was driving the black land cruiser, said that a dog came in front of the car, so she diverted the vehicle towards the edge of the road to save the animal.

After the accident, the locals pulled out Shivani and Sumit from the car and informed the police. The two were rushed to Prachi Hospital where Sumit was declared brought dead, while Shivani is undergoing treatment.

An FIR has been filed against Shivani in Chitalsar police station and the cops have taken her blood samples to confirm whether she had consumed liquor or drugs.

“Shivani Bhanushali was driving the car, while Sumit Dhakankar was sitting beside her. They were returning from Yeoor Hills. We have recorded Shivani’s statement,” said an officer from Chitalsar police station.

Shivani is a resident of Unnati Wood in Ghodbunder Road, while Sumit resided in Vasant Vihar. “Shivani works in a multi-national company and Sumit was a car dealer. As per the primary information, Shivani and Sumit had planned a get together at Yeoor, where Sumit consumed alcohol,” said another police officer.

“The woman is injured and has been admitted to a private hospital. As per her version, a stray dog caused the accident. The woman has been booked for the accident and we are investigating all the aspects,” said Dr Vinay Rahod, DCP (zone 5).

The FIR has been filed in Chitalsar police station under Sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.
