Many colleges have formed teams comprising senior teachers and the Delhi University Student's Union (DUSU) has appointed an anti-ragging squad with representatives across the campus. But the student's body had a word of caution too for the fuchchas.
"Ladkiyon ko apni maryada mein kapde pahenkar aana chahiye. (Girls should dress in a dignified manner for college)," was how DUSU vice-president Kriti Wadhera reacted when asked what advice she had for the new students.
"I am also a girl and don't want anybody to fell victim to sexual harassment. However, this doesn't mean that they should not wear trendy dresses. But it should not be revealing. This leads to provocation for the bad elements," she said.
The names and phone numbers of the representatives of the anti-ragging squad will be displayed on notice boards of the colleges, she added.
Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean, students' welfare said, "Enough awareness has been created in the past years to check eve-teasing and ragging cases on the campus. Still we come across one or two cases. I hope that we are able to completely stop it this year. We are working with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that incidents of ragging are addressed strictly."
Delhi Police, on their part, will keep a check on the campus through 24 CCTVs, while police control room (PCR) vans and pickets will be deployed at colleges and strategic points to keep a close watch on those entering the campus. In addition, complaint boxes have also been placed at colleges and girls' hostels and surprise checks will be conducted in buses plying on the varsity routes.
Students can also contact the university proctor at 27667291, the dean of students' welfare at 27667092 or the police helpline for women at 1091 and 23317004. A distressed student can call 1800-180-5522 or send an e-mail at helpline@antiragging.net, 24x7 toll free anti-ragging helpline of Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.
"We are hoping that we will get a warm welcome from our seniors. With all the arrangements from the university, DUSU and Delhi Police, I hope no untoward incident takes place," said Srishti Verma, who will join

| DU in collaboration with the Delhi Transport Corporation, launched a campus bus service at the North Campus on Tuesday. The bus service, which will be available for students and staff of the University, will have a flat charge of Rs 5. The buses will ply from Monday to Saturday between 8 am and 6 pm on three routes - Ramjas-Khalsa Route, Stephens- Gwyer Route, Faculty of Management Studies-Hans Raj College Route. |
Another fresher Sonalika disagreed with Wadhera advice. "Instead of advising students to dress in a particular manner, the DUSU should take steps to ensure that girls are not harassed anywhere on the campus."
Shreya, who will join Hindu College, agreed. "The anti-ragging initiatives should be implemented effectively to make our life easier and safe. It is not the dress that provides you safety," she said.
Confusion reigns
Still there is no clarity on how and when semester system will be implemented in undergraduate courses. The Delhi University has decided to implement semester system in 13 science courses but with teachers opposing the move, no one knows what kind of pattern will be followed in the class. The matter is now sub-judice and would come up for hearing at the Delhi High Court on Wednesday.
