Joint team of Union Health Ministry and state health department officials draws this conclusion after visiting several schools in area that has substantial NRI population

A team comprising Union Health Ministry officials and state health department officials said yesterday that Kothrud is the epicentre of the H1N1 virus in Pune. The officials came to this conclusion after team members Dr S K Srivastava and deputy director Dr R R Kattie visited 11 city schools whose students have been affected by swine flu. Of the 108 people who have tested positive for the H1N1 virus, 50 are from Kothrud. Kothrud has a substantial globe-trotting population of techies and NRIs. Many of the swine-flu affected schools are in Kothrud area or the contiguous Sinhagad Road, Prabhat Road and Karve Road areas.

Dr R R Pardeshi, of the PMC health department, said that 50 students from Kothrud have been admitted to Dr Naidu Hospital after they tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

Jaya Bhaskar, principal, Abhinav Vidyala English Medium School (AVEMS), whose students have contracted the virus admitted that the school had many students from Kothrud. "It may be possible that H1N1 may have spread when these students mingled with others in the school," she said.

Chandrakant Mokate, deputy mayor, PMC, said he was organising street plays to educate people about swine flu. "It is sad that most swine flu cases in the city have been traced to Kothrud," Mokate said.
