Trial court dismisses 48 litigationsu00a0 against alleged violators

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had its day in court on Tuesday; a rather forgettable one at that. Metropolitan magistrate Ajay Garg dismissed 48 criminal cases filed by the MCD against alleged violators of civic law. As per the trial court's decision, the identities of the accused have not been verified in many of the cases.

"These complaints reflect the bad state of affairs in the largest civic body (MCD). I am constrained to opine that no fruitful purpose would be served by keeping these matters alive except to burden the over-burdened judiciary. Hence, these complaints are dismissed for non-prosecution," the court said.

The metropolitan magistrate, in a common order, refused to hear the cases, lodged nearly six years ago by MCD under Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, against the persons for allegedly carrying out illegal construction in their respective premises in Karol Bagh area.

The civic body officials were in a shock because of the decision, but they blamed the Law Department for shortcomings. "The Chief Law Officer should improve the quality of the advocates," said Yogendra Chandolia, Chairman, Standing Committee, MCD.

Pension for eunuchs

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has now decided to offer monthly pension to eunuchs. MiD DAY had reported this proposal earlier this year. A notification has been issued by the civic agency under which it will pay Rs 1,000 as pension to eunuchs all across the city. According to the MCD, there are approximately 3 lakh eunuchs in Delhi. Till now, MCD had been giving old-age pension to senior citizens, widows, mentally and physically challenged, widowers, divorcee women, etc. MCD is the first government agency in India to provide a facility or help to the eunuchs.
