More than a year after the body of a woman was found in the Katraj ghats, police arrest her lover for murder; say he has confessed all

"She was pregnant and threatening to come home if I didn't marry her. That's why I killed her," a 43-year-old man allegedly confessed to the police after he was arrested for the murder of a woman whose body was found in the Katraj ghats 15 months ago.

Anil Maruti Pangare (43), a resident of Kapurhol in Bhor taluka, was arrested on Saturday for murdering his lover Kalpana Shivaji Salunke (40) on April 11, 2009.

The police said the case was difficult to crack, as the body was unidentified for almost a year and there was no eye-witness to the crime.

Adulterous affair
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Rajesh Kumar Mor said, "Anil and Kalpana were having an illicit relation since 2008. Both were married and Anil has three children."

The officer said the two were working in a company, Uttara Foods, as labourers. Mor said after Anil had impregnated Kalpana, she warned him that he would have to marry her or else she would forcibly stay in his house, so, Anil planned to get her out of the way.

"Kalpana was two months pregnant. Anil feared that once his illicit relations with her became public his image would be tarnished in the village. On April 11, Anil brought Kalpana to Katraj ghat in a bus, where both consumed liquor. Later, Anil strangulated Kalpana with her scarf and left her dead body in the jungle nearby," DCP Mor said.

Missing complaint
Kalpana's brother Pramod Sahdev Gaonkar alias Ladgaonkar had lodged a missing complaint for Kalpana as late as July 31, 2010 at Rajgad police station of Pune Rural police. A special investigation team comprising Assistant Commissioner of Police Abhay Yeole, Police Inspector Nagnath Wakude, A P Ade started enquiries at Kalpana's company.

Labourers at Uttara Foods told the police about Kalpana and Anil's relationship, and the police started looking for Anil," DCP Mor said.

Anil Pangare was remanded in judicial custody till Thursday by the Shivajinagar Court on Sunday, said Inspector Wakude.
