As the Commonwealth Games approach closer, security concerns loom larger. The terror threat was always prevalent, but the recent spate of Maoist attacks has added another dimension.

But Noida police remains unperturbed. The reason - 30 of its officers are receiving special training to deal with 26/11-like situations. So now, in case of a terror attack the Noida police will not have to wait for the NSG. Its very own commandos will come to the rescue.

These officers are currently receiving training at Surajpur police lines. Various maps of the city and details of important buildings and hotels would be made available to the commandos. They are getting trained not only to defuse bombs but also to communicate in fluent English with foreign delegates who arrive for the Games.

"We have chosen our best officers who are young and sharp. The selection process was stringent as each officer was selected after mental and physical tests. They will be trained by senior officers who have taken NSG training at Surajpur. They are being specially equipped for the Commonwealth Games," said Senior Superintendent of Noida Police Ashok Kumar Singh.

For the convenience of foreign tourists, these commandos will communicate in English. They are also being trained to handle hi-tech arms and ammunition. They will be equipped with heavy-duty weapons like INSAS, AK-47 and SLR and will sport black uniforms. The commandos would also be provided bulletproof jackets which will be sanctioned from the Commonwealth Games budget.

Added muscle
Cops in the Uttar Pradesh townships are going state-of-the-art with their equipment.
Ahead of the Commonwealth Games in October, the Noida authority has asked the state government to facilitate the cops with satellite maps of the city, global positioning systems devices, moving close-circuit television cameras, geo-location devices and modern fire fighting equipment. Apart from enhancing the fire power the police force is also set to get more hands. About 2000 policemen and 200 commandoes are likely to be added to the force to guard the township in during the Commonwealth Games.

Policy for better policing

The pot-bellied cops are already sweating it out in the gym to look presentable and are taking lessons in improving their lingua franca. Also, in a first-ever initiative by the police, the inspectors and constables will be given visiting cards to help the common man in time of need. A while back, the Greater Noida authority had launched an MMS/SMS service to regulate traffic in town and make registration of traffic violations easy. The unique selling point of the service is that even if a traffic cop is not present at a junction, a common person can record a traffic violation over his phone and send the MMS to the helpline number or else he can report it through a text SMS on the number 9999977100. The Greater Noida police have also recently acquired 20 hi-tech Bolero cars, which will operate as PCR vans.
