With several seats lying vacant, as many as 52 junior college teachers in the Pune division have become surplus. Majority of the excess teachers are reported from the Arts stream, which is being attributed to the dearth of students studying Arts, rendering lecturers idle.

Every year, the deputy director of education department in the city generates data of how many students have enrolled in junior colleges for class XI and class XII, and accordingly the strength of teachers is fixed for the particular academic year. However, for the first time ever the numbers of teachers who have become excess has crossed the 50 mark.

“If we see the statistics, most of the teachers are from the Arts faculty. For the past few years, the Arts stream is receiving minimal response and that is the main reason why teachers are becoming excess,” said Balasaheb Owhal, assistant education director of deputy director office.

With the exception of two teachers from the Science and Commerce streams, the remaining are from the Arts. “We have asked all junior college principals to send details regarding teacher vacancies in their colleges, so that the excess can be transferred there. Till now, we have received details of around 70 vacancies. So these teachers need not worry, as they will be accommodated in other colleges. The only thing is that if there is no vacancy in their taluka, they have to go other talukas or even district,” Owhal said.

The Pune division includes Pune, Solapur and Ahmednagar districts. “Last year, the number of surplus teachers was 20, which has increased to 52 this year. This is a matter of concern, especially for the Arts stream, as every year the number of students opting out of this stream is increasing,” an education department official said.u00a0
