Sharad Pawar's niece Shama first visited Hampi 15 years ago as an artist, but was so taken in by its glory that she decided to stay on to showcase its culture to the world

As the debate on who is a Mumbaikar and who is not generates heat across the country, here is a Mumbaikar who would rather you call her a Karnatakan. Shama Pawar, daughter of Union minister Sharad Pawar's elder brother, lives in the state to pursue a cause -- to showcase Hampi and the glory of the erstwhile Vijaynagar Empire before the world. Once a regular visitor to Hampi, Shama has now dedicated her life to Hampi, which symbolises the rich culture and heritage of the state. To pursue her aim, she settled in Hampi 15 years ago.

"I would love to be a Karnatakan and have been staying here for the past 15 years," said Shama Pawar. "I have dedicated my life to Hampi. My family too has settled here." Shama visited Hampi 15 years ago as an artist, and was so taken in by what she saw that she decided to turn into a full-time 'activist' working for the cause of Hampi.u00a0

Through the Kishkinda Trust, which is named after an episode in the Ramayana, she is working on initiatives to take Hampi to the four corners of the world. This includes aspects like exhibiting dance, music and other art forms from the state.

Besides observing most festivals connected with the Vijaynagar Empire, the trust has been promoting local arts like dance and music through with initiatives like 'Festival of Arts' and 'River Tern', a concert on the banks of the Tunga-Bhadra exclusively for tourists coming to Hampi. "We showcase different aspects of Hampi. This includes the architecture, irrigation, scientific innovations and town planning of the empire, which remain an ideal even today," said Shama.
