Delhi government mulls hike in bus fare

Bad times are ahead for bus commuters in Delhi. Concerned with the Delhi Transport Department's (DTC) whopping loss of more than Rs 1 crore daily, the city government is mulling a hike in bus fare. The corporation has been urging the government for a 'reasonable' increase.

According to sources, there will be a marginal increase in the fare for air-conditioned buses, but normal bus fares will see a steep hike.

"As per the Delhi government's plans to phase out Blueline buses, it has been decided to pay private bus operators (who will run the new fleet) Rs 47.50 per kilometre. But, as the DTC will earn merely Rs 18 per kilometre, the government has to pay Rs 30 per kilometre to fill the gap. So, the hike is imperative," said a transport department official.
