BJP leader asks governor to bolster irrigation scam probe

The leader of the opposition in Vidhan Parishad and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vinod Tawade yesterday met Governor K Sankaranarayanan, requesting him to appoint his representative in the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the irrigation scam in the state. Tawade was accompanied by Shetkari Kamgar Party MLA Jayant Patil and MLC Chandrakant Patil to Rajbhavan here.

Speaking to the media after the meet, Tawade mentioned that the term of the SIT formed to examine the multi-crore scam in December last year was supposed to end on June 30.
“Although the SIT got a six-month extension, since its inception the governor hasn’t appointed his representative in the committee. The measure of assigning the additional member will save the team from being toothless. Therefore, this step should be taken immediately,” said Tawade.

The BJP leader also appealed the governor to give directives to the state government and the speaker to hold a discussion on the irrigation scam on the floor of the legislative council, as well as the assembly.

Tawade said that while the speaker of the assembly has already consented to such a dialogue, the deputy chairman of the legislative council had rejected the proposal after industries minister and Congress leader Narayan Rane contended that legislative council rules do not allow a discussion on a subject that’s sub judice.

Tawade also raised the issue of frequent suspension of opposition party members in the legislature over unparliamentary behavior. Referring to the temporary ouster of MNS leader Praveen Darekar and Shiv Sena’s Dilip Raote from legislative council, he appealed the governor to look in to the matter, which Sankarnarayanan has promised to do.
