BBMP says work for the metro has wreaked havoc wherever it has begun; project authorities insist that is not true
The ongoing Metro work has left Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials very worried. This is because they allege that the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has not been maintaining the roads wherever the work is on.
"These roads have become a horror for motorists. How many of them knew that the BMRCL is responsible for maintenance of these roads? We get most of that blame, since these roads are badly damaged and full of potholes," said a BBMP official.
The roads that are badly damaged are Kanakapura road, Magadi road, West of Chord road, CMH road and at Ulsoor. Few roads are motorable, for example MG road though the Metro work is on the roads has been maintained fairly.
A BBMP spokesperson said, "We are not supposed to maintain roads where metro work is in progress. The BMRCL had said that they would maintain the roads without causing any hurdles to the motorists. But most of the roads are not in a good shape. They should repair it at least once in six months."
"The BMRCL are not supposed to divert traffic to connecting roads, but they have done so in many places such as Chord road, near Nanda Theater in Jayanagar, Ulsoor and other places. By doing so, roads get damaged due to the extra load of vehicles," he added.
Roads blocked
"They had mentioned that they would not block any roads when the work is going on, but they are doing it, regardless," said a senior BBMP officer.
BBMP Engineer in Chief A K Gopalaswamy said, "They have maintained few roads, but very poorly. Hope BMRCL officials will take up the issue and act accordingly."
BMRCL PRO Yeshwanth Chauvan said, "We are maintaining the roads wherever the work is on. We are attending to the damaged roads. The roads do get damaged because of heavy vehicular movement, but we take care of it."
