Two arrested men reveal Delhi hooch tragedy kingpin's name and the group's mode of operation

The kingpin of the hooch tragedy that killed 26 in the Capital in the months of March-April has finally been identified.

Subhash Gupta, the bartender of death, is in his thirties and had been arrested by the Model Town police in 2001. But today, he is on the run.

Gupta's name was revealed during the interrogation of the two main accused in the case, Chaman and Raman.

Earlier, the Delhi Police commissioner had announced a reward for information about the source of the killer brew.

Interrogation

According to sources in the police, the two accused have revealed that Gupta was the kingpin of the racket and hired men to carry out his orders. Gupta asked his workers to befriend truck drivers on the highway working for nearby sugar mills.

"The men Gupta hired bribed truck drivers around Rs 800 each to procure drums of methyl alcohol, one of the brew's key ingredients.

The methyl alcohol would then be mixed by others in the gang with water. They got into trouble when just to make a little more money, they mixed less water to make the liquor more powerful and resulted in the deaths," said a senior police official, wishing anonymity.

Seasoned criminals

The two accused confessed to have been in the business for the last five to eight months. The two, along with their younger brother Pawan alias Pujari, had been operating in the Raghuveer Nagar area for the last nine months. Pujari was arrested in 2005 but is out on bail.

After the hooch tragedy at Raghuveer Nagar, the three had been on the run and were hiding at their relative's house on the outskirts of Delhi. While the two were arrested, Pujari is still on the run.

Satyendra Garg, additional commissioner of police (Crime), said, "We are definitely going to solve the case. Till now we have arrested 11 people and more arrests are likely. Our investigations are on."
