Soon to be commissioned 3D GIS maps of Delhi will give access to every inch of the city to the government
Three-dimensional is the flavour of the season. First, James Cameron went 3D with his extra-terrestrial adventure 'Avatar', then Sam Mendes confirmed that next Bond could be watched fighting and romancing in all his glory from all possible angles. It's Delhi's turn now.![]()
It's Delhi's turn to go 3D now
The national capital is set to be mapped in the 3D images of Geographic Information System (GIS) maps, which will be able to give a real insight into the city to those who are guarding it against terror and those who are governing saddi Dilli.
The maps will enable the government and security agencies to collect real time information on events occurring in the city and 30 feet deep in the ground, too.
"We are ready with 3D GIS system. Entire Delhi had been mapped and marked for this system. The project will be commissioned in April. This will enable government agencies to access sight of every house in Delhi, even its doors and windows. With this system, government agencies will be able to see underground installations up to 30 feet deep below the land surface," said Savitur Prasad, secretary, Department of Information Technology, Government of NCT of Delhi.
Initially, 3D GIS maps will be accessible only to government agencies and there will be dedicated optical fibre line to access this map. Some portion of the system will be made available for common people, which are being currently worked out.
"The complete map will not be accessible for public due to security reasons. There will be some parts of this system that will be accessible for them on a separate portal. It is being worked out and access for public may start after six months of the commissioning in April," said Prasad.
The 3D-GIS mapping will also be used to keep a tab on public utility services like roads, streetlights, sanctioning of building plans, etc.
