Centre has undertaken no operation against Maoists: Chidambarm

The Centre has not undertaken any operation against Maoists and it is only assisting state governments in their counter-insurgency measures, Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Friday.

"There is no operation. Operation is your invention. State governments are carrying out all the (counter) insurgency measures against Naxalites. "Wherever necessary the Central government is providing assistance by way of central paramilitary forces, intelligence sharing and technical help. State police is responsible for maintaining law and order.
Operation Greenhunt is purely an invention of the media," he told reporters here.

Asked about Maoist leader Kisenji's statement that the Naxals were willing to hold talks on the condition that there was ceasefire, Chidambaram said he has not seen any such statement.

On whether there are any intelligence inputs about any fresh terror attack, he said, "Security forces are vigilant and perfectly capable of thwarting any attack. There is no reason to raise any alarm."

Asked about the reported links between Maoists and LTTE, he said the so-called links were only reported in the media. "I have not seen any written statement or a document. I cannot comment on what is broadcast by the media," he said.
