Colonel rams car into bike, evades arrest

Colonel Umakant Bhuselalji Tiwari, assigned to the 303 Infantry Battalion, rammed his car into a bike -- allegedly under the influence of alcohol -- killing one and seriously injuring another on Sunday night. He was driving from the city to Aundh. The youths, Pankaj Kisen Netake (25) and Yogesh Pawar (22), were rushed to Medipoint hospital in Aundh. Pawar died yesterday. Tiwari called army officials after the incident, after which he was taken to the military hospital at Khadki.

However, even after a complaint was lodged at 3 am on Monday, no arrests were made. Eyewitnesses said that the colonel was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was driving recklessly.

Narayan Navgire, Pawar's uncle, said, "The colonel had come to Chatushrungi police station premises at 12.30 pm, 12 hours after the accident, with insurance company officials to settle the accident claim. He approached Netake's maternal uncle Devidas Gaikwad to make a settlement, but Gaikwad turned violent, and the colonel fled." Chatushrungi police have claimed that they are not aware of this incident.

They have also asked the hospital authorities and Army Headquarters to inform them six hours prior to his discharge so that he can be arrested.

According to CMO of Medipoint, Pawar was brought to the hospital on March 8 and had been unconscious ever since. Netake is undergoing treatment at the Karne Hospital near Swargate and has three fractures on his right leg.
