Cops raid restaurants, rescue eight minors

On Children's Day, the police cracked the whip on restaurant owners who had employed minors. In a raid yesterday, the Social Security Cell of police rescued eight children aged between 10 and 16, who were employed in four restaurants in the city.

Police said that the rescued children hailed from different states. The hotel owners have been booked under section 3 of Child Labour Act and section 26 of Juvenile Justice Act.u00a0 Working on the instructions of Commissioner of Police Meeran Chadhha Borwankar, the security cell raided the restaurants Mathura, Ashwamedh, George and Subhadra and rescued six children under the age of 14 and two children under the age of 16.

Senior police inspector with social security cell, Bhanupratap Barge said, "We have received directions from the police commissioner to take action against hotel owners who employ minors in their restaurants. We raided the hotels in Shivajinagar, Deccan Gymkhana and cantonment areas and rescued eight children who were working in the backyards and kitchens as dishwashers.

Among the eight children, two are from Nepal while the others are from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Raigad. We are now verifying whether these boys were runaway or brought to the city, promising jobs."

Barge added, "As per the directions from the commissioner of police, the raids are going to continue in the city." Today, all the rescued children will be presented before the Commissioner of Labour and then sent to observation homes.
