Along with 193 striking resident doctors, DMER sends termination letter to doctor who is recovering in the ICU

In what can be called a major goof up, the Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER) sent a termination notice to a female resident doctor (26) who is recovering from a liver transplant in Manipal, Karnataka. Around 193 striking resident doctors have been sent suspension notices.

A senior doctor from Sassoon Hospital Administration said, "We may revoke the order in case of this student.

Six months ago she had submitted a leave request for health reasons." Another doctor said, "She didn't take the Dean's permission before going for medical treatment, but we will check whether she joined the strike."

Six months ago, the female doctor, who is a postgraduate student of surgery, contracted TB during her stay at the Sassoon Hospital. She took anti-TB medications, but continued to tend to patients and did not get much rest.

The toxicity of medication, lack of rest and improper, untimely diet resulted in drug-induced hepatitis, which damaged her liver. Her friend said, "A month ago, she exhibited symptoms of liver failure and jaundice. Thus her parents took to Manipal for treatment." Since the last month, she is in the ICU. Her friends said, "She may take nine to 12 months to recover."
