Couple found dead under mysterious circumstances

In-laws claim that the duo committed suicide because they were facing a severe financial crunch, while the girl's family alleges that they were murdered

A couple allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from a ceiling fan at their home in Kaveri Nagar yesterday.

While the police suspect that Gangadhar, 30-year-old cab driver, took the extreme step because he has been jobless for several months and was heavily indebted, Kavya's relatives maintain that it is a case of murder and not suicide as claimed by the girl's in-laws.

Neighbours claim to have heard a commotion while Kavya's in-laws beat her up when Gangadhar had gone out to buy groceries

Her brother Karthik said, "Kavya's mother-in-law Lakshmamma used to beat her and humiliate Gangadhar for not earning enough to support the family."

Likewise, Kavya's elder brother Ravi alleged that her in-laws may have killed the couple and hanged their bodies.

"I know my sister; she is not the type who will commit suicide," he said, adding that from the very first day of her marriage, Kavya was tortured, humiliated and beaten up by her in-laws.

"The scars and fresh bruises on her body would prove that it is a case of murder and not suicide," Ravi added. Kavya's family is now demanding a detailed investigation into the case.

Killed?
As if to back up the allegations made by Kavya's family, the couple's neighbours have a version that is eerily similar.

They claimed to have heard a commotion while Kavya's in-laws beat her up when Gangadhar had gone out to buy groceries.

When he returned, Kavya narrated the incident to him, after which he had a heated argument with his parents.

Meanwhile, the police have found a receipt from Gangadhar's pocket indicating that he had pawned his wife's valuables at a local pawnbroker recently.

"The couple was under a financial crunch and could not have been able to bear the humiliation meted by Gangadhar's parents," said a police official.

The couple leaves behind two daughters aged around four and two-and-half years respectively.
