In a letter issued to Mumbai University and the state education board, the department has issued an August 4 deadline to canteen owners to ensure they maintain hygiene standards
After targeting restaurants and roadside eateries, the Food Drug Administration (FDA) department has turned its attention to school and college canteens. It has written to the Mumbai University and State Education Board requesting them to get their canteen owners registered with the department. They have also been instructed to follow the hygiene standards defined in the Food Safety Standards Act of India (FSSAI).u00a0

“In the letter, we have asked Mumbai University and the education board not to entertain anyone who operates without the required FDA license,” said Joint commissioner, Suresh Deshmukh, Food, FDA.
A similar letter has also been issued to retail storeowners in malls that sell food items. “Keeping in mind recent cases of food poisoning, we expect canteen owners to maintain hygienic standards. Schools and colleges will be given till August 4 to adhere to the new law,” said Deshmukh.
The department has also written a letter to retail chains that supply raw material to the malls. “Hygiene and good quality food is a must. We will take strict action against offenders after the deadline.” u00a0
