When the diktat was first issued several months ago, most of the schools chose to ignore it. When the department did not receive any of the reports from the schools on the status of the seats reserved for the handicapped teachers, the department issued a fresh circular warning that the schools may be derecognised if the quota is not filled by them soon.

Only teachers with at least 40 per cent handicap are eligible for these seats. They must obtain a certificate from a surgeon in a civil hospital in their district and submit it with their applications.

Legislation was passed in 1995 at the Centre making it mandatory to reserve three per cent teaching posts in this category of schools for people with 40 per cent disability or more.

B Mane, education officer, said, “We had earlier sent a circular to the schools asking them to fill the quota for teachers with over 40 per cent handicap. Since the schools have sent no reports about the seats being filled, we had to send them a reminder. If the schools fail to fill the quota this time, the department will cancel their recognition.”
