Posters pasted by MCD on houses near the collapsed structure late on Tuesday night, asking inhabitants to vacate premises within 24 hours

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has woken up from its slumber; after many years and many deaths. MCD officials were seen pasting posters on all adjacent houses near the now collapsed building.

In the notice the MCD has clearly mentioned that these buildings are dangerous to live in and the people living in these building must vacate within 24 hours. The officials refused to comment on the issue when reporters asked them about the notices.

"The officers arrived after 11 at night and started gluing posters on the houses. They told us to vacate our houses immediately as all of the structures in the nearby area are dangerous. It's a messy situation for us. Where will we move in 24 hours with our family? Where were these officers for the last 5 years? None of them ever visited to check on the illegal constructions or safety measures. These officers and engineers allowed such buildings to be constructed and now they are warning us to vacate. Where should we go now?" asked Ramakant Jha, a resident of the area.

The MCD officials got off their vehicles, pasted the posters and immediately mounted on their vehicles and drove away because reporters present at the spot were asking questions about the incident. Meanwhile the Delhi government announced that dangerous buildings in the area will be demolished very soon.

Money for lives

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to families of those killed in the building collapse in east Delhi. At least 65 people died and 78 were injured in the incident. "Normally we give a compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh in such cases, but in this incident we will double the compensation amount. Those injured will be given Rs 50,000 and will be treated in the hospitals for free," Dikshit, who visited the collapse site at Laxmi Nagar on Tuesday, told reporters.
