Pune's civic commissioner created history on Friday by tabling the proposal for highest ever target expenditure for healthcare in a year by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). According to the budget submitted by PMC Commissioner Mahesh Zagade, the corporation plans to spend Rs 99 crore in a civic expenditure of Rs 2,910 crore on healthcare in 2010-2011. "This is the biggest amount for health in the history of the civic body," said Dr R R Pardeshi, chief medical officer, PMC.
Neelesh Nikam, chairman of the PMC's Standing Committee informed MiD DAY that the civic body's health budget has almost doubled from Rs 49.50 crore in 2009-10 to Rs 99 crore in view of the swine flu epidemic in Pune. "We want to establish adequate infrastructure for the city, so that we can fight this pandemic and prevent such outbreaks in the future," he said.
