CBI sleuths to get latest laptops and IT training to speed up investigation

Indian spies are going hi-tech. To spur speedy investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths will be equipped with latest laptops, mobile phones and IT training. The Union Government has sanctioned India's premier investigating agency to arm its officers with modern gadgets. The officers will also undergo training to increase their computer and technical know-how.

CBI director Ashwani Kumar, while saying that the agency is working hard to fill all its vacancies, mentioned that there is a serious need to upgrade the investigating skills of its officers. "There are more than 1,400 vacancies in the organisations and these will soon be filled. We are also equipping our officers with latest gadgets to help them in speedy investigation," he said.

Kumar was visiting Ahmedabad to attend a seminar on forensic science. He also delivered a speech on investigation of terrorism-related cases and asked for cooperation from all concerned agencies.

He informed that the CBI is planning a major overhaul to update the capabilities of its officers and their technical expertise. The agency is also looking forward to a system where all cases will be completed in a period of less than a year. "At present, our performance is affected as old cases are taking too long to be solved while new cases keep coming in. Mostly the delay is because of the lack of trained officers in all ranks," said a senior officer from CBI, on condition of anonymity.

To speed up, the CBI is also looking to strengthen its legal expertise. "We have to consider all angles including investigation, filing of chargesheet and court hearings. Performance will not improve until the cases are brought to an end in the court. Special CBI courts and public prosecutors too are required to improve the organisation's final effectiveness," said the officer.
