It's not often that we get the keys to a chocolate shop. Imagine our surprise then, the morning we landed outside Shocolaat to find it locked from the inside, and a hand emerge through a grilled window with keys to the store.

This is it, we thought to ourselves: our chance to hijack a chocolate shop! The ransom was easy we'd demand a lifetime supply of Belgian chocolate.

Luckily, better sense prevailed as we gingerly stepped over the high, white threshold of the store into a cosy looking room. Proprietor Samaira Tolani was not in (she was ill, we were later informed), but assistant Nandini was delighted to welcome us anyway.

On short notice, you can get Plain Chocolate (Rs 450 per kg), Praline, Crispies, Fruit 'N' Nut (each Rs 500 per kg) and Roasted Almond (Rs 700 per kg). The Marie Delight (Rs 30 per piece), which is essentially a chocolate-dipped biscuit, is also easily available.

So, are the chocolates any good? Well, the good news is they use Belgian chocolate. The not-so-great news is that chocolate, even Belgian chocolate, will eventually get stale, as ours were. The half-kilo of Assorted Chocolates (Rs 325) we bought had definitely seen fresher days.

Post their launch we were informed that they have helpful stickers that allow you to choose the flavour you'd most like, which is good news. The chocolates we bought weren't labelled, so we peeled wrapper after wrapper unsure about what flavour to expect. But hey! That's not to say we don't like chocolate surprises!

The Marie Delight tasted fresh and we've heard grateful gushing from anyone who's ever tried their Strawberry Delight (Rs 30 per piece), fresh strawberries dipped in dark or white chocolate and rolled in a variety of toppings like finely chopped almonds or coconut shavings.

As of last week, the new flavours available include Cookies 'n' Cream (Rs 600 per kg), Peanut English Toffee (Rs 15 per piece), sugar-free chocolates (Rs 1,200 per kg), Dark Chocolate Biscotti (Rs 12 per piece) and White Chocolate Biscotti (for Rs 15 per piece).

If you decide to place an order with Shocolaat, it's probably a better idea to give them 24 hours' notice. They can have your order home-delivered and gift-wrapped. For orders of five kilos and above, they need 3-4 days notice.

Our verdict? Shocolaat has a variety of interesting flavours that are definitely worth trying out, but it's probably not in your best interests to spring a surprise on them, as we did.
