Those who fought the British to realize the dream of making India an independent republic used their hunger as a tool against the oppression. The new breed of revolutionaries in Independent India also went without food on the 61st Republic Day on Tuesday.

However, for the latter lot it was more of a compulsion than a choice. As most of the shops and markets remained closed for the day on the Republic Day, hundreds of students who live around the Delhi University had to go without lunch.

Even dhabas that caters to most of these students were shut apart from the multi-national food joints like McDonald's.

Roadside paratha shops and tea stalls were also closed for the day, giving a harrowing time to the scholars. Those who live in paying guest accommodations complained that their domestic helps took the days off
and they had nowhere to manage food.

Saharsh Tiwari, an MBA aspirant and a Delhi university pass out, who resides in Model Town said, "These are the souvenirs which we get on the occasion of national holidays and festivals. Students roaming aimlessly in search of a hotel or dhaba are a regular feature on such holidays. Even if you are ready to shell out more money there is no food available as all outlets remain closed."

Sourav Sarda of Delhi School of Economics usually orders food from a nearby dhaba, however, Tuesday was not just his day. "I usually go for the home delivery of food. Walking up to the hotels and waiting for the order to reach your table is the most stupid thing to do. But the complete shutdown made it hell."

The shop owners expressed their helplessness as according to the The Delhi Shops and Establishment Act, 1954, they have to shut shop on the three national holidays - Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti.

Ramesh Kumar who runs a fast food van at Mukherjee Nagar said, "Firstly, it was a national holiday then I kept the shop closed for security reasons. We know that a lot of students live here and it would have been difficult for them to manage, but we are helpless."

Devesh Minocha, who is enrolled with the Faculty of Arts, Delhi University, said: "Although finding food on national holidays in North Campus especially near Vijaynagar and Hudson Lane is a tough task to do but a little "jugaad" and can help you satiate your hunger."

On national holidays, finding food can be really tough around Delhi University. But, a little 'jugaad' can work wonders.

Even if you are ready to shell out more money you cannot buy food as shops of all hue and colour down their shutters. It's pathetic.

I usually order food at home and don't go to a hotel. But, owing to Republic Day all shops were closed. I remained hungry.
