With the launch of INS Arihant, India joins a select set of countries that have a nuclear submarine.

Very few countries have their own indigenously-built nuclear-powered submarines. China, France, US, Britain and Russia are some of the few who do.

You can get more information on INS Arihant and on nuclear submarines from Wikipedia.

Incidentally, the world's first nuclear submarine was the USS Nautilus, which was commissioned in 1954.

A recent accident involving nuclear submarines happened in 2009 and involved British and French subs.

If you want to read a novel involving nuclear submarines, we can recommend Ice Station Zebra by Alistair MacLean.
