The government today sought to allay fears of terror threat from the minds of industrialists in the wake of Mumbai attacks saying a number of steps have been taken to strengthen security across the country.
"Internal security has been a matter of concern for the corporate houses and the government as well. The government is committed to ensure a conducive, secure and harmonious environment," Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said.
He was inaugurating a conference here on the role of India Inc in national security. Referring to the Mumbai attacks, Jaiswal said brave securitymen stood against all odds to fight against the terrorists and added that efforts were on to bring all those behind the incident to trial.
The Minister said steps being taken to tighten security in the country included setting up of national police mission and micro missions, and a national investigation agency besides passing of some important anti-terror laws.
Congress MP and industrialist Naveen Jindal lamented that policemen in the country were using "vintage" weapons and worst quality ammunition.
"The ammunition quality (used by policemen) is the worst in the world. We use World War II vintage weapons," he said suggesting use of arms of better quality. Jindal, who is a member of Parliament's Standing Committee on Home Affairs, said private security agencies should be allowed to import non-lethal items.
Police Chief of Jammu and Kashmir Kuldeep Khoda and his Meghalaya counterpart Kulbir Krishan explained how terrorism affected economic growth.
