Assailants bludgeoned first year scholar to death

A first year student of Fine Arts at the Jamia Millia Islamia University in south Delhi was murdered on the varsity gate in broad daylight on Tuesday.

The assailants, reportedly former students of the university, called Shah Rukh outside the campus near the main gate and attacked him with iron rods and hockey stick. The incident occurred at 3 pm.

The police said the attackers had been expelled from the university last year. "We found a student lying in a pool of blood in front of the gate of the Jamia Millia University. We rushed him to the Holy Family hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. They said Shah Rukh died of excessive bleeding. We have registered an FIR under section 302 of IPC and we are investigating the case," said a police officer.

The Jamia administration also formally informed the police about the incident. The university would remain closed for two days.

"As soon as we came to know about the incident, we immediately informed the police. We are providing each and every detail to the police to help in the investigations," said Masood Alam, Proctor, Jamia Millia Islamia.
The police claimed the suspects have been identified and they will be arrested soon. "We have identified the suspects and we are conducting raids to apprehend them," the officer added.

The deceased was a son of a Yoga teacher, Shaheer Alam, of Jamia Millia Islamia. Police said they were investigating all angles, including any love affair which might have triggered the incident.Classes in the varsity were immediately dismissed after the incident.
