The condition of 95-year-old ailing Jyoti Basu remained very critical Friday morning.

"Basu's condition is very critical. His oxygen requirement has been further increased although he was put on haemo-dialysis for two hours last evening," Dr Sushrut Banerjee, member of the 8-member medical board constituted to look after him, told reporters here on Friday.

He said Basu's cardiac and renal functions had not shown any improvement. He was put on haemo-dialysis for two hours in view of his deteriorating cardiac and renal functions, Banerjee said.

Basu, admitted to the AMRI Hospital on January 1 with pneumonia, will be put on haemo-dialysis again this afternoon for another two hours if his health permits, he said.

Doctors have already increased the dose of Ionotropes to stabilise his blood pressure, he said. The Medical Board will review his condition at 11 am.
