Nashik: A 55-year-old tribal farmer allegedly committed suicide in Ganga Mhalundi village, around 35 kms from here, for not having enough money to purchase fertilisers for his crops.

Bhaurao Shankar Palve had consumed poison yesterday noon, and died around 1 am today at Nashik Civil Hospital, Harsul Police Station in-charge P P Salunke said.

"Palve was trying to collect money to buy fertilisers for the paddy crop. He had even sold the gold chain of his wife to raise funds. However, since he felt that the amount was not sufficient for the purchase, he got frustrated and took this extreme step," Salunke said.

The relatives of the victim as well as the activists of the Republican Party of India (RPI) brought his body to the District Collector office in protest this morning.

It was only when the Sub Divisional Officer Ramesh Misal granted financial assistance of Rs 10,000 and assured additional compensation from the government, the body was allowed to be taken away, police added.
