Delhi police have arrested a couple for burglary in Vasant Kunj, south Delhi. They had burgled nearly Rs 1.20 crore. Rs 80 lakh cash, jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh and a car were recovered from their procession. The accused have been identified as Mahender Singh (30) and his wife Vijeta, residents of Harit Vihar.
On July 23, police received a call regarding burglary from one Harish Nagpal. He claimed at 8 am in the morning, he had gone somewhere, while his wife, son-in-law Manish, daughter and son also left the house. Around 10.30 pm when he returned, he found there was no lock on the main door and Rs 80 lakh kept in the box of the bed and jewellery were stolen.
Later, Nagpal's son-in-law Manish went missing and so did the family's Hyundai I-10 Car. His mobile number remained unavailable. "On enquiry Nagpal said he did not know much about Manish. His daughter was handicapped and they did not ask too many questions when Manish agreed to marry her and stay in their home," said a senior police official. According to the police, Manish had also demanded the car and a house in Safdarjung Enclave as a condition to marry Nagpal's daughter. Nagpal even sold a property in Sarojini Nagar to buy a shop for Manish.
"With the help of electronic surveillance and interrogation of a number of contacts, it was found that the accused had fled towards western UP. Accordingly, raids were conducted and Manish was arrested, along with his first wife, Vijeta," said DCP (south) Chhaya Sharma.
On being interrogated, Manish confessed to the crime and said he belonged to a poor family. "He came across a matrimonial advertisement in which Nagpal had written he wanted a ghar jamai. Manish then connived with Vijeta and visited the house. He introduced Vijeta as his sister Varsha and agreed to marry Nagpal's daughter. Then, as soon as he got the chance, he grabbed all the money and ran," said the police official.
