More evening courts on the roll

Though pink slips are becoming the norm of the day and cheques going extinct, there has been reportedly an increase in the finance-related litigation.

To settle the matter, the government is mulling to increase the number of evening courts from the present six to 20.

The initiative was launched taking a page from Gujarat and six magisterial courts three at the Patiala House complex and another three at Karkardooma started sitting for two extra hours in the evening to settle cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act for bounced cheques upto an amount of Rs 25,000.

The sources indicate that the additional courts are likely to start functioning from next week.

"Since such cases are on the rise, it seems a logical move," a court official said.

"The expansion will include courts at Dwarka, Rohini and Karkardooma," the official added.

This initiative in the Capital was spearheaded by the Delhi High Court to lessen the agony of litigants.
