Seriously?: And now, it’s festivals
IT’S bad enough that we have to face the rotten sight of poorly maintained forts in our home state, and now we learn about another baffling development. The state’s tourism department has signed an MOU with the Archaeological Survey of India to not only look after the upkeep of our (one-time?) impressive citadels and forts but also announced the hosting of fort festivals on its premises. It’s one thing that interest has been renewed in these neglected wonders but another if these are opened up to tourists, because with it comes litter, and the same old story. We’ll be watching.

Capital joy: The Daisy will be in Delhi
Dilliwallahs will now have legitimate bragging rights over Mumbaikars. Come November and the capital will witness the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC), one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the world. The first-ever edition of the Vegas-style festival will be held on November 12 and 13 and will feature one of the largest line-ups of International and Indian artists ever witnessed by the country. Watch this space for more on this big-ticket festival.

A matchwinner from Adiga?
This one is bound to pique the interest of the average cricket-loving Mumbaikar. Booker Prize-winner Aravind Adiga is back with a page-turner, Selection Day. It looks at the life of 14-year-old Manjunath Kumar, his cricket-obsessed father, cricket-playing older brother, and his curiosities in the Maximum City including the world of CSI. It will be interesting to see how Adiga spins his wordly magic into this book, and pleases the tough-as-nails Mumbai cricket lover. A copy has just arrived at our desk, and we’ll keep you posted if this reads like a Test match or a T20.

Vidya vows Melbourne
Melbourne’s La Trobe University had a taste of Bollywood last week when Vidya Balan dropped by to meet staff and students who were participating in a new international effort to help children with disabilities in India. The university has supported the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) since 2011. This year’s festival is a sponsor of India’s Educate the Educators project. Vidya Balan was in Melbourne as a guest of the Festival. She launched the Train the Trainers campaign in collaboration with the university in Melbourne along with the support of the Victorian Government. Mainly focusing on those with special needs, the initiative aims to provide assistance and education to all and have a few seats reserved for them in all educational institutions. Going by their reactions, we’re curious if any students toyed with
a career switch to Bollywood.

The physics of laughter
Nehru Centre had a special visitor in the form of Professor Jayant Narlikar, Emeritus Professor, Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, at the sixth Dr HN Sethna Memorial Lecture held yesterday. The audience latched on to every word, and later, going by this frame, seemed to have had fun catching up on the old times.
