Police arrest gang of seven, including gym instructor and his girlfriend for murder of wealthy paediatrician

The kidnapping and murder of a city-based pediatrician Dr Sharath Kumar was finally solved yesterday with the arrest of a gang of seven, which included a gym instructor and his girlfriend.

The killers had on the day tricked Dr Kumar into accompanying them on the pretext of taking him to treat a patient. They then forced him to call up his friend, a jeweller, and asked him to deliver ornaments worth Rs 1.2 crore.

The gang later strangulated Dr Kumar to death. The man who delivered the jewels helped the police create sketches of the accused, who live in the same neighbourhood as the doctor. The gang was arrested shortly.

Alok Kumar, said, "Ravi was aware that Dr Sharath Kumar owned seven buildings that earned him rent of around Rs 10 lakh every month. This knowledge pushed him to hatch the kidnapping so he could extort Rs 25 lakh to repay his debts," said Alok Kumar.
