Waste wonders in au00a0light and shadow act plus 4 more must-catch events

Till: July 5
Where: Metro Big Cinemas, MG Road, Dhobi Talao Junction.

When you walk into Metro Big Cinemas for a movie, an awkward assortment of random objects on the floor might catch your eye. There are telephones, a keyboard, fragmented toy parts, a hulla hoop, paper scraps, tin cans, water bottles, circuit boards, plastic oil cans and pipes objects you wouldn't expect to find in the swish lobby of this multiplex. Look closer and you'll realise that the light thrown on the assemblage creates a shadow of our planet (with the outline of continents) topped with a tree, a butterfly and a bird in flight. The light installation, put up for World Environment Day by interior architect-cum-installation art designer Hetal Shukla, makes the best out of waste and tells us how waste, when well managed, helps build a
reality that was once unimaginable.

Legalisation of homosexuality, the state of Indian bureaucracy, the farce of Ajmal Kasab's trial, the absurd popularity of Big Boss, the obsession with fair skin, the decline of Mumbai... a few topics that have become more than just water-cooler conversations. Yet, they find new meaning in One on One, a staged event that's brought the city's leading playwrights including Rahul da Cunha, Anuvab Pal and Ashok Mishra together, to write 10-15 minute-long monologues or duologues chronicling India Today. From hilarious to tragic, these writers address impending issues that will set grey cells in motion and even tickle the funny bone. Either ways, it is worth it.
