NMMT starts 4 ring route bus services in Airoli

In a bid to make commuting easier for residents of Airoli, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has started four ring route buses.

The four ring route buses will ply between 5.20 am and 11.05 pm every day of the week

As the satellite city has started attracting more people and newer sectors are being developed, the pressure on public transport has been mounting and authorities felt the need for more services. The newly initiated services will bring the much-needed relief to commuters who often have to shell out considerable sums on auto rickshaws. NMMT has allotted four buses that start from Airoli bus depot and go through different sectors of the city.

One of the residents, N Ramakrishnan said, “Auto rickshaws in the node charge us exorbitantly, and most of the time, they refuse to take us to far-off sectors.” The bus service will be available on all days of the week. The first bus of the day will start at 5.20 am and buses will ply until 11.05 pm. Each bus takes about 28 minutes to cover the entire route. NMMT authorities had been receiving numerous requests from residents and even political leaders to look into this matter.

A senior official from NMMT, on condition of anonymity, said, “With the inauguration of this bus service, commuters can travel short distances by paying around Rs 5-6 rather than taking a rickshaw that often charges them a lot of money. If this bus service gets a good response we might think of starting similar services in other nodes such as Rabale, Ghansoli and Nerul.”

The NMMT has given priority to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corridor (MIDC) areas, since a large number of people work in and around the area. NMMT also plans to purchase mini buses in the coming months. If all goes according to plan, these mini buses will be used as ring route bus services in other nodes.
