The police department in Pune is on the lookout for illegal arms dealers operating in the city. With no previous records of such suspects, the department is clueless about such gangs operating here.
The realisation comes in the light of the arrest of a Nepali youth Durga Babu Mahanto, suspected of trying to sell arms to local gangs on Friday. The city Crime Branch found three Nepal made pistols and six live cartridges in Mahanto's possession.
Though the police have yet to establish Mahanto's link with local illegal arms dealers, they are confident of cracking the case.
"Investigations are still underway as we are trying to find out who Mahanto was going to sell the pistols to," said a police official.
According to the police, this is the first time that illegal guns from Nepal have been discovered in the city. The police are clueless on how the arms reached Pune, a city in western India, which is miles away from the Indo-Nepal border.
The arrest has also raised serious security concerns on the Indo-Nepal border, which is yet to have a secured check post. Such incidents can only suggest that not only arms and drugs are flowing freely into the country through the borders, but terrorists and ultra-leftist Maoists are also infiltrating inside India.
