Division bench of state HC will not hear appeals filed by convicts, challenging a lower court's verdict on the killing of software engineer BV Girish

A division bench of the Karnataka High Court recused itself from hearing appeals filed by a woman advocate and three others, challenging a lower court verdict sentencing them to life imprisonment for conspiring to kill her fiance, a software engineer, yesterday.

During the hearing of the case on September 8, Special Public Prosecutor Venkat Rao had presented before the court a pamphlet titled 'Get Justice for Girish', which he claimed was being distributed by unknown people to
"twist the case".

The case will now be placed before the Chief Justice who would assign it to the other judges.

"I have been serving for the past 22 years and have heard over 27,000 cases," said Justice Sridhar Rao, who is part of the division bench to hear the appeal.

On July 14, Shubha and three other accused, Arun Verma (her boyfriend), Venkatesh and Anand, were sentenced to life by a fast track court for conspiring to kill BV Girish,u00a0 to whom she was engaged seven years ago.

Shubha, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court, had filed an appeal before the High Court for acquittal, whereas the state government has sought for an enhancement of sentence.

The High Court has admitted the appeal for confirmation of the sentence given by the session court.
